Winter dangers are coming early to Squamish.
Squamish Search and Rescue warns Sea to Sky adventurers that recent snowfall has created an increased risk in the backcountry.
The avalanche risk is high and the snowpack is shallow.
"The recent snowfall, combined with the abnormal coastal snowpack, suggests that human-triggered avalanches are likely to occur and Avalanche Canada is recommending avoiding all avalanche terrain on Friday," reads a news release sent out by SAR on Friday morning.
Winter officially starts on Saturday, Dec. 21.
"The abnormal snowpack has also led to open crevasses, or unsupported natural snow bridges, that can destabilize while crossing and lead to falls and entrapment.
Other ground hazards include fallen trees, holes, streams, rocks and boulders that may be hidden by a light layer of snow.
Usually marked winter routes may also not be completely established yet.
"If you find yourself in unfamiliar surroundings, turning back early is always the best option," the release states.
SAR recommends using the AdventureSmart trip planning app to prepare for your trip before you go, and always tell someone where you are going and when you'll be back. "Winter travel should also always involve consultation of the Avalanche Canada ratings and messages — remember that conditions can change quickly so keep yourself up to date with the many resources available to you," the release warns.
Of course, also carry appropriate gear.
Weather conditions, avalanche ratings and multiple other factors may delay Search and Rescue members from being able to get to you – always be prepared to spend more time outdoors than you had intended when leaving for your trip.
