A discarded cigarette is the suspected cause of a fire that ignited a pile of timber byproduct at the old Interfor site on the south side of the Mamquam Blind Channel Saturday morning (July 25). The incident sent Fire Rescue crews scrambling for water to extinguish the bark mulch, said Fire Rescue chief Ray Saurette.
"It created lots of smoke and just burned on the surface," said Saurette. "But given the weather, it created a problem for a while to bring in a water supply. We had to lay a hydrant line from the Shell gas station across the tracks and down to the actual site. So it cut off all the traffic to the Shell and the KFC."
RCMP was called in to turn away traffic for about an hour and a half. Normal vehicle flow resumed at approximately 1 p.m.
