Guilty for a good cause

Squamish's one-day jail to raise bail money for the Kidney Foundation - the Round-up 4 Research - raised $23,555 on Tuesday (Nov. 14).

Squamish's one-day jail to raise bail money for the Kidney Foundation - the Round-up 4 Research - raised $23,555 on Tuesday (Nov. 14).

Organizer Stacey Harding said that the total, which she expected to reach $25,000 by the end of November, would go to patient services and research into kidney disease. She was very pleased with the amount raise.

"Everyone reached their bail or nearly did by the time we finished," she said.

Mayor Ian Sutherland, who like the other "bosses" was brought in by the RCMP to the jail based at Save-On Foods, raised over $1,000 by calling his friends and colleagues and securing pledges to "bail" him out. Chris Rommel, of Rommel homes raised the most out of the two dozen "jailbirds" who took part, bringing in an impressive $3,800.

Harding said the Squamish Round-up, now in its second year, showed the great spirit of residents.

"Thanks to Squamish for two years in a row of really outstanding responses," she said. "The money raised will stay within B.C. and will primarily go into research, help improve recovery times and assist those with financial burdens."
