Intoxicated pre-teenagers cause a disturbance

RCMP have been unable to locate a group of children who appeared severely intoxicated while roaming Garibaldi Estates during the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 9.

At 9:30 p.m., a residential property manager in the 1800 block of Mamquam Road called RCMP to report that a gang of 15 males and females had been escorted out of the building after causing a disturbance.

The females appeared to be 11 or 12 and "very intoxicated or high," according to an RCMP report of witness statements.

The group split up upon leaving the building, some heading north and others south on Mamquam Rd. Police were unable to locate them.

Furry Creek excavation unearths 'dynamite'

A residential development project came to a halt on Tuesday (Aug. 15) when the excavation of a Furry Creek site unearthed what appeared to be dynamite lodged in a rock.

Upon further observation, it was discovered that the item was a fuse core.

The site had been a gravel pit from 1960 to 1965 and investigators suspect the charge had been left behind, according to Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

RCMP took precautions nonetheless when a former blaster working nearby informed them that in the 60s, nitroglycerin was placed in the rock hole before a charge was dropped.

Vancouver-based explosives experts attended the scene to remove the object.

The site will be closed down until an Worker's Compensation Board (WCB) investigation clears it for safety.Shoplifter assaults RCMP member

An intoxicated woman put up a fight when caught shoplifting at Save-On Foods Thursday, Aug. 10.

A Save-On loss prevention officer stopped the suspicious woman who subsequently caused a disturbance in the store by screaming and swearing.

When an RCMP member attempted to arrest the woman, she added assault to her list of charges by kicking the police officer.The woman was taken to Squamish General Hospital, examined and cleared for injuries.

She was then lodged in a cell until sober and released to North Vancouver provincial courts.

McDonald's landscape goes up in flames

For the second time in less than two weeks, a discarded cigarette has caused a restaurant's landscaping along Highway 99 to catch fire.

Fire Rescue responded to reports of a fire at the McDonald's restaurant at Cleveland Ave. on Sunday (Aug. 13) after a discarded cigarette, presumed to have come from a passing motorist, caused bark mulch and cedar shrubs to ignite.

Firefighter Bob Fulton said tall flames and smoke emitted from the landscaping, but the restaurant suffered no serious damage.Fire Rescue reminds residents not to discard lit cigarettes into landscaping.
