Clear out your clutter and find your life.

That was the message consultant Marlyna Los gave at her Feng Shui discussion at the Squamish Library Sunday (Jan. 9).

According to Los, not only is clutter in your life getting you down, it may also be stopping you from reaching your goals.

"Get rid of the clutter and make room for success," she said. "When the clutter is gone, you have room to focus on the most important things in life."

Los told the class everything in life has energy, even dirty laundry, and there is a desire to be surrounded by things, which give off positive energy and send a message as to what you want to represent. Clutter, she said, comes from the verb 'to clot' and when clutter accumulates, it clots energy.

"The name of the game is to have the most energy," said Los. "Ask your self what is it I want and does my space reflect that?"By creating a space to reflect your goals you can stimulate more positive energy fields and remove the obstacles stopping you from reaching your goals, mentally and literally.

She said clutter can make us feel ashamed to the point of not having guests over. It can make us depressed, create a feeling of excess baggage and force us to do extra cleaning. According to Los, not only is an excess of stuff a fire hazard, we also work better when we know where things are and our lives are unrestricted by unnecessary "stuff."

"If you don't love it, get rid of it," she said.

Los described the clutter zones in most houses as being garages, closets and storage rooms, but said it can be found anywhere in your home. She explained the importance of having a clutter free garage and doorways because they are the exit and entrance to the world.

"They are the pathways and passageways to our lives and you want to attract the kind of energy you want," she said. "We should love what is in your garage."

By creating a positive space in your garage, Los said you will be happy to come home from work at night and park your car, affecting your mood for the rest of the evening.

She said we often hold onto things because we think we might need them in the future - something she said you can get over by trusting you will be able to afford what you need when you need it.

To get rid of the clutter in your life, Los recommends working in the mornings, drinking lots of water, playing nice music and taking your time.

"Asking a friend to help works too, especially when it comes to clothes," she said.

Los, who was trained in traditional Feng Shui methods, gives private consulting for offices and homes, as well as conducting seminars. She plans to do a Feng Shui workshop in Squamish in April of this year. More information can be found on her website: www.balancing-essentials.com.
