The race for Test of Metal entry spots is on.
Starting today (Dec.1) at 6 p.m., registration for the North Shore Credit Unions presentation of the 2011 Test of Metal opens for locals only at the races website, which is located at www.testofmetal.com.
A local is defined as someone who lives between Furry Creek and DArcy.
Registration will remain open until Sunday (Dec. 5) at 6 p.m. or until all 200 local spots are filled.
Registrants are asked to provide an appropriate proof of residency, a B.C. drivers licence or ID card, as well as a secondary piece of identification in person (between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.) or by fax by 4 p.m. on Dec. 11 to Connections at 37710 Second Ave. in Squamish. They can also be faxed to (604) 892-3380.
The race, which has been running its current course since 1996, attracts mountain bikers from around the globe and has become one of the most anticipated events on the B.C. mountain biking calendar. Past participants include Canadian Olympic athletes Alison Sydor, Geoff Kabush, and Seamus McGrath, as well as notable celebrities such as Vancouver Canuck legend Trevor Linden.
For the first time ever, the race will allow up to 1,000 people to register, up from the 800 in previous years.
There is a $75 fee to register for the race, which includes the District of Squamishs new $5-per-racer trail maintenance fee.
The 67-kilometre race features more than 1,200 metres of climbing and 35 kilometres of singletrack racing and is scheduled to take place on June 18, 2011.
