Man ticketed for driving 165 km/h, failing to stop

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

Squamish RCMP this week tracked down and issued both a speeding ticket and a citation for failing to stop for police after constables clocked a vehicle driving 165 kilometres per hour on Highway 99 near Brackendale.

The incident occurred on Friday (April 29) just after 4 p.m. Officers were conducting laser speed enforcement at Highway 99 and Depot Road when a northbound red BMW convertible was clocked at approximately 165 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, RCMP Staff Sgt. Guy Pollock said in a statement.

Officers flagged the vehicle to the side of the road and the driver slowed down before continuing past police, Pollock said.

Officers later located the vehicle abandoned in a private Squamish driveway.

"Police did not get clear answers or driver co-operation initially," Pollock said. "Steps were initiated to tow the vehicle for investigation, at which time the driver responsible approached police and admitted that he was driving and failed to stop."

Vehicle impounded

Last Tuesday (April 26) at 10:30 p.m., Squamish Highway Patrol officers were conducting a sobriety check at Highway 99 and the Mamquam River Bridge when a vehicle driven by a 36-year-old woman was stopped.

The driver denied having consumed liquor, but an odour of liquor was apparent on her breath, Pollock said. Police then demanded a breath sample and the woman blew a "fail" on a roadside screening device. The woman, who had no previous alcohol-related offences, was issued an immediate 90-day roadside driving prohibition. The vehicle, which was not registered to the woman, was impounded for 30 days, Pollock said.

Reported assault probed

On Saturday (April 30), Squamish RCMP received a report of an assault at the Helping Hands Society homeless shelter. Police investigated the matter but no charges were laid, Pollock said.
