Mayor going bald

He didn't get to $10,000 himself, but the community has raised enough money for Mayor Ian Sutherland to take the cue-ball pledge.

He didn't get to $10,000 himself, but the community has raised enough money for Mayor Ian Sutherland to take the cue-ball pledge.

Sutherland promised last month to shave his head if a minimum of $10,000 in pledges was raised for the Cops for Cancer Tour for a Friend bike tour.

Sure enough, the goal was met and Sutherland and Squamish RCMP Sgt. Colin Worth are going under the shears Saturday (Sept. 11) at 2 p.m. in the MarketPlace IGA parking lot.

The Tour for a Friend will see RCMP officers, including Const. Kim Janakka, cycle more than 600 km through the Sea to Sky corridor and the Lower Mainland in support of pediatric cancer research and the Canadian Cancer Society's Camp Goodtimes.

The tour will be coming into town next Sunday (Sept. 19) and will be participating in a community dinner at Totem Hall that evening before leaving on Monday morning for the Lower Mainland. The tour concludes on Saturday, Sept. 25 in Vancouver.

The Cops for Cancer partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society has raised over $2.7 million in B.C. and the Yukon since 1994, to fund pediatric cancer research and programs for children with cancer. Participating cyclists organize fundraising events in their respective communities throughout the summer, and also raise money in each community they visit on the tour.
