This year’s Squamish Youth Council met for the first time on Oct. 4.
The youth council is made up of selected local young people between the ages of 14 and 24.
According to the District, the aim of the council is to give members an opportunity to engage with the District of Squamish and community leaders. The council serves a 10-month term and takes on projects and activities that serve the community.
Last year, for example, the group facilitated the Bear’s Den event, which had local non-profits pitch ideas to the group in an effort to earn a grant. Eventually, the council awarded $10,000 to Howe Sound Secondary to revitalize the school’s courtyard.
