Merchandise theft probed

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

Squamish RCMP are investigating the theft late last week of approximately $1,100 in merchandise that had just been delivered to a downtown business.

On Thursday (March 1), police received a report of a suspicious male taking boxes from the back of a business in the 1300 block of Pemberton Avenue, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said in a statement.

The white male, wearing a brown hoodie, a brown jacket and blue jeans, was last seen pushing a shopping cart loaded with boxes eastbound on Pemberton, then southbound on Third Avenue, Pride said.

Police believe a small, white, older-model four-door sedan that was seen in the area might have been involved in the crime. Patrols of the area did not turn up either the suspect or the vehicle.

Witnesses also reported seeing two other males, possibly also taking some boxes, making two trips from the area. The investigation is ongoing. If you have information about this or other criminal activity, please contact Squamish RCMP at (604) 892-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Forklift abandoned

On Monday (March 5) at around 11:15 a.m., police received a report of a forklift having been abandoned on a walking trail near Nexen Beach. The machinery was tracked to a business on Galbraith Road, near where the forklift was abandoned. A fence surrounding the business had had its lock cut to gain entry, Pride said.

Police believe the culprit(s) may have intended to steal copper wire from the business. However, the business has been targeted by those looking for copper wire in the past and what was on the site had already been stolen, Pride said.

Bike recovered

On Friday (March 2) at around 2:30 p.m., police received a report of a mountain bike having been stolen from a home in the 1000 block of McNamee Place in Dentville. The bike had been left unlocked outside, Pride said. Another bike, a men's Norco Mountaineer 18-speed, blue and black, was left in the place of the stolen bike. The stolen bike had been recovered by police on Friday at 11 a.m. and was returned to its owner, Pride said.

With the weather improving, police are reminding citizens to secure their bikes properly to prevent thefts and to record serial numbers to help in the recovery of bikes that are stolen.

Computer stolen

Last Thursday, police called to look into the theft of a computer from a vehicle that was parked along Cleveland Avenue found that a driver's-side door to the vehicle had been damaged to gain access. Stolen was a Dell laptop computer with a 15-inch screen, valued at around $500. The theft occurred sometime between 5 and 10:30 p.m., Pride said.

Vacant house entered

On Wednesday, Feb. 29, police received a report of a break-and-enter at a vacant house near Loggers Lane and Winnipeg Street. Entry was gained by removing boards from the building. It's not known whether the perpetrator(s) intended to steal anything, but a number of "personal items" were left at the scene, Pride said. Because the property had been vacant for some time, it's difficult to determine when the break-in occurred, Pride said.
