Mining Museum brings Copper and Fire

Community

The third annual Copper and Fire celebration will be held at the B.C. Museum of Mining at Britannia Beach this Sunday (Aug. 14) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will feature blacksmiths, potters, glass blowers, artists, jewelry makers and more and they will interact with guests as they demonstrate their particular talents. It will be a great day for the whole family as it is half price admission for this event and includes underground tours of the mine. There will be many fun activities planned for the youngsters as well as face painting by Jessica Lauder.

The Copper and Fire celebration also includes live and local entertainers. Juan Carreras, a classical Spanish guitarist who will spin his magic as well as singers Carolyn Grass, Paul Borchert, Jeffrey James, Mario and Anne Iacovone and Paul Coulter-Brown. For hungry guests, the concession stand will be open.



The monthly bird count for the Squamish Environmental Conservation Society will be held on Sunday (Aug. 14) and participants are asked to meet at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company at 7 a.m. All levels of birders are welcome to join in on this fun and educational event. There is a plant and garage sale at the Squamish Manor and Cedars located at 38209 Third Avenue tomorrow (Aug. 13) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The seniors would appreciate your patronage.



When you have visitors in town do take them to the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. Along with the very popular mini-train there is now an opportunity to climb on board the newly restored former B.C. Rail "Budd" Car #BC-33. Each Saturday and Sunday, the train departs from the Mac Norris Station at the Park between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The ride is about one and a half miles long and it takes you out to the interchange with CN and back. The cost is a mere $2 per person. The Annual Mini Rail Day takes place on Sunday, Aug. 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.



We all know that dear Kay Wirachowsky is unable to continue with her Over the Hill column but I am sure she will be pleased with her replacement. Welcome on board Barbara Rudkin and in the coming weeks I'm sure you will have all the contacts in place.



The Women on Wheels (WOW) are planning a local ride on Aug. 15 and the meeting place is Canadian Tire at 9:30 a.m. Take along a lunch and a swim suit for a swim at Colleen's place afterwards. For more information, please call Shirley at 604-898-5715.



This information will probably be found in Barbara Rudkin's column but I will mention it too. In last weeks column the trip to the Cloverdale Fraser Downs and Casino was planned for September but Elaine Ramsay now has a confirmed date and that is Thursday, Oct. 20. The last day to sign up and pay is Sept. 10. The visit to Storyeum in Gastown has been changed to Sept. 21. On Oct. 13 there is a seniors' trip to the River Rock Casino and Show in Richmond. The 2 p.m. show is entitled The Magic of Dance and will feature Irish dancing. The last day to book is Aug. 31. Please phone Elaine at 604-898-5463.

This is a popular month for birthdays at Hilltop House as several residents will celebrate July birthdays on Wednesday the 17th at 2 p.m. Congratulations to Mary Goad, Barbara James, Jessie Wigglesworth, Margery Hammerstrom, Edna Payne, Margery Mitchell, Alice Husted, Randy Walter, Gwen Fox and Peter Vahey.



Bill and Ruth Smith lived in Squamish for several years but in the mid 1990's, they moved to Fort Langley. Bill passed away on July 30 and a memorial service was held on Aug. 8 with a number of friends from Squamish attending. Our sympathy is extended to Ruth, their daughter Marilyn (and Mike) and sons and to the Smith's son David.



The next destination for the Tantalus Walking Club on Thursday (Aug. 18) will be a walk on the Cheekye Fan Trail and there is a slight incline on this walk. Please meet at the corner of Government Road and Ross Road at 10 a.m. For more information, please call Joyce at 604-898-5594.



It's billed as a Big Pork Picnic BBQ and will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion on Friday (Aug. 19) starting at 5 p.m. The cost is just $5 per person.



Registrations are now being taken for the last Adventure Outing Camp for 8 - 11-year-olds. It will also be held the week of Aug. 29 to Sept. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. On the same dates but from 1 to 3:30 p.m. there is Active Afternoons for six and seven year-olds. The annual Caribbean Summer Jam in downtown Squamish is planned for Sunday, Aug. 21 at 37835 (Vertical Reality Sports Store) from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
