Missing hiker found

Two hikers spent an unexpected night in the bush on Monday (Aug. 15) after becoming separated while bush whacking up Rubble Creek near Garibaldi Lake. The pair had only intended to be out for the day and did not carry overnight gear.

Two hikers spent an unexpected night in the bush on Monday (Aug. 15) after becoming separated while bush whacking up Rubble Creek near Garibaldi Lake. The pair had only intended to be out for the day and did not carry overnight gear.

After spending the night in the open, one of the hikers made his way out to the Rubble Creek parking area on Tuesday morning and called RCMP for assistance.

SAR members responded by helicopter.

The missing person called SAR on his cell phone and directed searchers to his location, 600 metres upstream from the parking area. Ground crews and SAR members reached the missing individual just after 1 p.m. and transported him back to SAR field command. Other than losing his shoes along the hike, the 25 year old from Ontario was in good condition.

Squatter suspected in accidental fire

A man Fire Rescue suspects was squatting on the former Galbraith Ave. Interfor dryland sort is believed to have accidentally caused a fire with a discarded cigarette.

Fire Rescue responded to a call of fire at the site on Sunday (Aug. 20) after a discarded cigarette ignited hog fuel and timber left on the site.

Gas smell reported in downtown

Fire Rescue responding to a report of gas fumes near Second Avenue discovered a 240-pound tank had been left open following maintenance procedures at the Superior Propane plant on Galbraith Avenue. The tank was empty but contained residuals emitting strong odours caused by a substance added to the gas to warn of its presence. The fumes were not noxious, said firefighter Bob Fulton.

Air enforcement a success

The RCMP has issued several citations for dangerous driving following air enforcement measures on Aug. 15, 16 and 17. Issued were 17 speeding tickets and 14 citations for passing on a double line.
