It should be a bit easier to find parking at Cat Lake this summer.

A new parking lot has been created adjacent to the Cat Lake Recreation Site.

The new lot was constructed because parking was inadequate before and overflowed onto the forest service road, causing safety concerns such as blocking industrial traffic and access for emergency vehicles, according to a spokesperson for Recreation Sites and Trails BC, a division of the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

The new parking area should allow 40 more vehicles, thus doubling the current available parking, and should provide sufficient space for both day users and campers.

The creation of the new parking area will allow for prohibition of parking on the forest service road, the spokesperson told The Chief in an email.

“Also, by providing a specified amount of parking, the amount of day use and camping will be able to be capped at an amount that is appropriate for the capacity of the site. This will help in managing the high level of day use at Cat Lake,” the spokesperson said.

The cost for construction of the parking lot was $33,000 and this was project was separate from the previous government’s funding announcement, according to Recreation Sites and Trails BC.
