Stay safe this Victoria Day

The busy May long weekend is notoriously troublesome on B.C. roads.

According to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) over the Victoria Day long weekend, on average, three people are killed and 455 people are injured in crashes in this province, based on a five-year average from 2018 to 2022. Speed is a top contributing factor in these crashes.

"Speed plays a role in every crash," said Shabnem Afzal, ICBC's director of road safety in a news release. "The higher the speed, the more time and distance you need to stop, making it harder to avoid crashing. When you drive at a safe speed, you can prevent crashes and protect the lives of all road users."

ICBC says law enforcement will continue to focus on speeding throughout the long weekend, including Victoria Day.

 Have a safe day, Squamish!
