Oceanfront work could begin in summer 2012

Briefs from Tuesday's DOS council meeting

Construction on the Oceanfront peninsula should start as early as summer 2012, Mayor Greg Gardner said this week.

"We have a plan, now let's implement it," Gardner said during Tuesday's (Jan. 18) council meeting, when the necessary amendments for the Oceanfront sub area plan to be integrated into the new Official Community Plan were given third reading.

Gardner said the project wouldn't have been possible without the landowner's help and commended Squamish Oceanfront Development Corporation for its hard work.

Train whistling only assessed at Amblepath

District of Squamish council reneged on its December decision to complete safety audits for all crossings in Squamish to address excessive train whistling.

During budget discussions on Tuesday, council members decided $60,000 for all the studies wasn't necessary because they likely wouldn't be able to fund the safety measures outlined in the studies.

According to corporate services general manager Robin Arthurs, each crossing would likely cost between $220,000 and $250,000.

Coun. Paul Lalli suggested only doing the study for Amblepath because most of the safety measures are already in place. Gardner agreed, saying the developer had already contributed a significant amount to the cause.

Coun. Doug Race was opposed to only funding one crossing and Coun. Corinne Lonsdale opposed funding the studies at all. The motion to only complete the study for Amblepath was carried, with Race and Lonsdale opposed.
