The Squamish Valley branch of the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is inviting citizens to an animal-themed day of fun next Sunday (May 15).

The event, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Squamish Valley SPCA, 39901 Government Rd., will feature pets looking for loving homes, a barbecue and garage sale, a pet photo booth and more.

The open house is part of a province-wide effort in conjunction with Hill's Science Diet to promote the adoption of homeless animals during Be Kind to Animals month.

"The open house series is an opportunity for people to meet the animals available for adoption and to have fun learning more about how to help animals in the community," Lorie Chortyk, B.C. SPCA general manager of community relations.

Hill's donates free food for dogs, cats, puppies and kittens in B.C. SPCA branches across the province to ensure that the animals receive a high-quality and consistent pet food, officials said in a statement.

The B.C. SPCA adopts out more than 18,000 animals through its 37 branches each year. All animals adopted from the B.C. SPCA are checked by a veterinarian, vaccinated, spayed or neutered and assessed for temperament. For more about the open house series, visit spca.bc.ca
