Popular Britannia Beach man dies in rollover

RCMP still trying to determine sequence of events

A popular young Britannia Beach man died this week when his jeep rolled over into the Squamish River.

Scott Moores, a 27-year-old who was raised in the tight-knit Howe Sound community, was spotted in his jeep after an apparent rollover in the Upper Squamish Valley Saturday (Sept. 19) afternoon.

At approximately 4:45 p.m. Saturday, a passer by driving along Mile 20 of Squamish Valley Road spotted the 1987 Jeep Cherokee submerged in the Squamish River. He alerted the RMCP and emergency crews attended along with members of the Squamish Search and Rescue team. Workers were able to secure a line to the vehicle, which was then it was towed to shore. The jeep was heavily damaged and contained Moores's body, according to the RCMP news release.

"We're trying to determine the cause of it and when it occurred," said Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

Moores was last seen leaving his Britannia Beach resident the previous night, said Ritchie.

"We're just trying to put a timeline together and see if we can narrow it down to see if we can found out who may have contacted or where he went," he said. "We don't have a lot right now and we're just trying to piece it together by talking to friends."

Ritchie said a toxicology report will determine whether alcohol was a factor.

Moores's death generated dozens of messages of warmth and sympathy for his mother Brenda on online news reports and Facebook pages.

"Thanks for helping me this summer to look forward to work or cheering me up with your whistling," stated one comment.

"You will be missed by everyone that was lucky enough to get to know you," stated another.

"Scott had an awesome sense of humour, and had a way of making others around him feel important," was yet another.
