A planned outage, shown here, was only supposed to affect about 40 customers. However, in a separate event, power ended up being cut for 1,900 customers in the downtown core.

A power outage temporarily cut the lights for about 1,900 people in the downtown core.

BC Hydro spokesperson Kevin Aquino said there was a planned outage at the very south end for Second Avenue that was only expected to stop service for about 40 customers.

The outage for 1,900 customers is separate and unplanned, he said.

Crews are investigating, and the cause is not yet known.

There is a possibility that it could be a mechanical problem with the substation, which could be fixable within a few minutes, but that is unconfirmed, he said.

There is no definitive timeline for how long the outage could last, Aquino said, however, as of about 10:15 a.m. power appears to have been restored.
