A few lucky Squamish children will soon be chosen to help launch a new movement in the Sea to Sky corridor.
A greenhouse will be built in a childcare centre for a project that will plant the seed of awareness of food security.
"Food security is ensuring that we can provide healthy food on everyone's table within the community now and seven generations from now," said food security organizer Caroline Armour.
Residents from affiliated sectors of the community - including foodbank users, health representatives, environmental educators and food growers - came together Tuesday (Feb. 13) to discuss and decide what food security project would best suit Squamish, and the decision came down to a child-sized greenhouse.
"The whole premises behind that is the kids at the childcare facility - who could be up to 10 years old - would have an activity everyday in the greenhouse and in this capacity would learn about planting a seed, how to take care of a plant, watch it grow and then harvest the food," said Armour.
"They would then consume the food that they had had a hand in growing."
A pamphlet would teach staff and children how to maintain the glass building to provide produce in perpetuity.
