There’s one week left to sign up for people who want to be heard by a national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

Survivors and family members affected by this issue have until April 20 to register.

“The stories of families and survivors are the heart and soul of the national inquiry, which is why we created an inclusive and supportive process to hear from as many voices as possible,” said chief commissioner Marion Buller in a news release. “Every truth shared will guide the next important stages of the investigation and help to inform our recommendations for change.”

This inquiry’s goal is to examine and report on the systemic causes of all forms of violence against Indigenous women and girls.

Institutional practices and policies implemented in response to this problem will also be put under the microscope as well, the commission says.

Between 2005 and 2010, the Native Women’s Association of Canada counted 582 cases of missing or murdered winning Indigenous women and girls over a span of 20 years.

Since the fall of 2016, more than 1,400 family members and survivors have registered to participate.

As of now, about 880 people throughout the country have shared their personal stories with the inquiry.

Those interested in registering need to provide their name, contact information and location in any of the following ways:
