Relay for Life kicks off tonight

The Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life takes place in our community tonight (June 24) at 7 p.m. until tomorrow (June 25) at 7 a.m. at Brennan Park Recreation Centre. Each event across the country begins with a Survivors' Lap to celebrate those who have fought the good fight against cancer. Taking part in the opening ceremonies will be Jacquelyn Kassa from the Canadian Cancer Society. After dusk, (approximately 10 p.m.) a moving Luminary Ceremony is held in memory and in honour of loved ones fighting the disease and those that we have lost.

Tamsyn Morote, the organizer for the Relay for Life encourages everyone to attend to lend their support and if they wish, donate to this most worthy of causes. She said there was a great lineup of entertainment planned during the evening.



Tomorrow (June 25) is the day the 20 young people from Canada and Uruguay arrive as part of the Canada World Youth exchange. They will be in Squamish until Sept. 12 and while living with host families, will be volunteering in the community at various projects. The Welcoming Ceremony will be held at the Eagles' Coffee Grounds on Government Road at 3:30 p.m. and will include a salmon barbecue and entertainment. It would be appreciated if you take some snacks or goodies to share with everyone.



The Knights of Columbus are holding a garage sale at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 2449 The Boulevard tomorrow (June 25) from 9 a.m. - 12 noon. Hot dogs, coffee and soft drinks will be available.



Tomorrow night (June 25) the Happy Times Children's Centre and the Howe Sound Daycare are having a beer and burger fundraiser night at the Grizzly Bar and Grill at 6 p.m.



This weekend is a good time to take in the Howe Sound Dance Academy's Snow White recital. The performance tonight (June 24) is at 7:30 p.m. and tomorrow (June 25) at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Eagle Eye Theatre. Tickets are available at the Eagle Run Coffee Shop and Dansez La Vie on Cleveland Avenue.



The Squamish and District Labour Committee holds its regular monthly meeting on the fourth Tuesday of each month. The next meeting is set for Tuesday (June 28) at 7 p.m. in the Howe Sound Teachers' Association office at 38161 Second Avenue. It will be the last meeting before breaking for the summer. Summer holidays for students and teachers begin next week. The Brennan Park Recreation Centre has a host of great programs planned for all ages. Fitness training for young athletics 12 years and up begins July 4 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Instructor Sylvia Gertsch will help youngsters develop core strength and stability using physio balls. Children 12 years and up interested in mountain bike riding are asked to call Marnie for more information. The BPRC number is 604-898-3604.



Rain or shine, the seventh annual Squamish Garden Tour will take place on Sunday (June 26) between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The $10 fee includes a map and you can tour at your leisure. Tickets are available at the Squamish Public Library, Billie's Bouquet, Anna's Attic and at the Garden Centre.



Plans are under way for the Squamish Summer Fest on Saturday July 2 in the area near the Squamish Pavilion. It will be held in conjunction with the Farmer's Market that runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a variety of entertainment including a children's choir, youth bands, singers and more. Anyone wishing to perform or to volunteer their time is asked to call Carolyn at 604-898-9689 or Greg at 604-815-4448 or drop in to see him at Gelato Carina or attend a planning meeting Monday to Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. there. Summer fests will also be held on Aug. 6 and Sept. 3 and are sponsored by the Squamish Town Care Association.



The Squamish Public Library is once again hosting its annual Squamish Reading Club and this year's theme is Undercover Reader. Registration for this club is free, open to all ages and starts on July 2 and continues throughout the summer. Children will receive a free reading booklet, stickers and a chance to win some wonderful prizes.



Another program offered during the summer months for children ages six to 12 years is Hooked on Books. Children will be able to participate in reading activities and other fun activities. Pre-registration begins on July 2 at the Squamish Library. Space is limited for these programs, so please sign up early to avoid disappointment.



It's a trip to Vancouver on Monday (June 27) for the Women On Wheels.

A Park Royal to Yaletown ride is planned and participants are asked to meet at Shoppers Drug Mart in the Chieftain Mall at 9 a.m. Transportation will be arranged for the trip to Park Royal. If you wish more information please contact Shirley at 604-898-5715.



The first session for Play Outside Camps for ages six and seven will be held July 4 to 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On the same dates, gymnastics camps for ages four and five begin but from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Two preschool programs offered the first week in July are rock, paper, scissors and gymnastics camp.
