The owners of one of Squamish's oldest buildings are planning a grand re-opening this weekend that includes the renaming of the business to honour its heritage.
In 1911, the building at Second and Victoria streets in downtown Squamish underwent a name change, from the Prince George Hotel to The Squamish Hotel. It remained that way for 70 years, offering lodging, a café and drinking establishment, the owners said in a statement.
More recently called the The Ocean Port - affectionately known to many locals as the OP - the building recently underwent a significant renovation that included painting and upgrading of the façade, renovating guest rooms and reinventing the pub as a lounge. A new liquor store has also taken over the area once occupied by the pub.
To mark the 100th anniversary of its renaming as The Squamish Hotel, the renovated building is to be known as The Hotel Squamish, a name that owner Scott McQuade said is meant to be "relevant to the new Squamish while giving a nod to the historical significance of the building." The first grand re-opening event for Scotties Liquor Store is planned on Saturday (Oct. 15) at the store.
