River Forecast Centre: Lowered threat of major floods at Squamish, Cheakamus Rivers

Minor flooding in low-lying areas is still possible.

After days of hand-wringing concern, the provincial River Forecast Centre has downgraded its advisory for the Squamish River, and its tributaries including the Cheakamus River, from a flood warning to a highstream advisory.

While the warning in place for those local rivers since Monday meant that the rivers were breaching their banks or would, a high streamflow advisory "means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected."

Folks should still be cautious around local rivers though.

"Fast-flowing bodies of water increase risk to life safety. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible," reads the centre's Feb. 1 advisory.

Thankfully for Pemberton, the centre has also downgraded its concern for the Lillooet River and tributaries to a high streamflow advisory.

Rainfall has eased throughout the Sea to Sky Corridor and drier weather and cooler temperatures are expected into the weekend.
