The small wildfire at Porteau Cove has been declared out.
The fire, which was at 0.2 hectares at one point, started at about 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, according to the Coastal Fire Centre.
It was suspected to be human-caused, as opposed to lightning-caused.
Coastal Fire Centre information officer Donna MacPherson told The Chief the fire was declared officially out on May 28, after crews patrolled the area with hand scanners — equipment that look like flashlights that scan for heat spots. Crews also physically touch the ground, searching for anything smoldering.
So far this fire season, which runs April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, there have been 264 wildfires in B.C., 50 of those were in the Coastal Fire region, which includes the Sea to Sky, according to the BC Wildfire Service.
Currently, campfires and open fires are permitted in our region.
