Squamish drug alert: White powder sold as cocaine found to contain fentanyl

The Squamish Overdose Prevention Site provides drug checking and other services.

The local health authority has issued an alert to Sea to Sky Corridor substance users that "white powder sold as cocaine in Squamish tested positive for cocaine and fentanyl."

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) issued the alert at about 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 4.

VCH advises folks to check their drugs.

The Squamish Overdose Prevention Site, located at 37930 Third Ave, is a harm reduction site that provides supervised consumption services, drug checking, and other harm reduction services.

These are anonymous toxic drug and health alerts and they are free.

Between January and July of this year, 1,365 people died in B.C. due to drug toxicity, according to the BC Coroners Service. 

Of the deaths that have undergone expedited toxicological testing, fentanyl was detected in almost nine out of every 10 unregulated drug deaths in July.
