Squamish editorial: If you know something about the Sea to Sky Gondola sabotage, say something

'We are better than those unbelievably callous actions. If you know something, say something before the Sept. 14 anniversary comes and goes.'

Another anniversary of the Sea to Sky Gondola sabotage has come and gone.

Aug. 10 marked the fifth anniversary of the 2019 Sea to Sky Gondola cable cut.

The cable was cut on two separate occasions, in 2019 and 2020.

We are also approaching the fourth anniversary of the second time the main cable was cut—in the early morning hours of Sept. 14, 2020.

And yet, no one has been charged to date.

Staff Sgt. Kris Clark, with RCMP E Division, told The Squamish Chief that “the investigation remains ongoing.”

He pointed to the 2022 RCMP press conference when a grainy video and thermal image of the suspect were released.

As a refresher, that video shows that at 3:57 a.m., a gondola security guard, holding a flashlight, is walking under one of the towers.

“The guard continues the checks and passes the cable when the cables begin to shake, [cabins fall] narrowly missing him. This occurs approximately nine seconds before he reaches the far side of the tower,” reads the video description.

In other words, we are nearing the anniversary of the sabotage that endangered a man’s life.

While the RCMP is still intent on nabbing their man or woman, at this point, years down the line, it is the friends or acquaintances of the person with whom the most hope likely lies.

“We know there are people out there, who have information that could assist police with this investigation, said BC RCMP Media Relations Officer, Sergeant Chris Manseau, in the 2022 press release. “Someone nearly lost their life, and police are urging anyone with information to please come forward.”

The person or persons who cut the cables may lack empathy, a moral compass and any sense of social responsibility, but those who know—or suspect—who is responsible must feel some pangs of guilt mixed with their twisted sense of loyalty to the saboteur.

While criminals rationalize that their anti-social behaviour is justified, it behooves those who are protecting them to step up and bring closure for not just the Sea to Sky Gondola staff but for the community at large, who deserve to see justice in this case.

We are better than those unbelievably callous actions. If you know something, say something before the Sept. 14 anniversary comes and goes.
