Squamish question: What's going on in the ditch along Hwy 99 in front of Tim Hortons?

If you have gone through the Progress Way Tim Hortons drive-thru to pick up your large black coffee and vanilla dip doughnut (OK, that might just be our order), you may have wondered what was going on in the ditch along Highway 99.

If you have gone through the drive-thru of the Progress Way Tim Hortons to pick up your large black coffee and vanilla dip doughnut (OK, that might just be our order), you may have wondered what was going on in the ditch along Highway 99.

District of Squamish staff confirmed the work is part of the Industrial Way/ Highway 99 Ditch Remediation.

"This will increase ditch capacity, improve hydraulics and decrease surcharging issues in the Industrial Way storm system," reads the District's website.

Surcharging means overloading the carrying capacity of the system.

The work started in mid-August and will be complete in a few weeks.

Coast Valley Contracting Ltd is doing the work, according to the District's Bids and Tenders page.

The budget for the project is $595,000.

There are intermittent Discovery Trail closures during the upgrades.

Detours are being marked for cyclists and pedestrians during closures.
