Anticipating an influx of crowds this long weekend, Squamish RCMP will be upping their presence throughout the corridor to help ensure COVID-19 measures are observed.

Police will be patrolling throughout the corridor, from north of Pemberton to Lions Bay.

"Our seasonal plans focus on lawful enjoyment, safety, and education of regulations and physical distancing,” said Sgt. Sascha Banks in a news release sent out Friday afternoon. “We recommend those who want to enjoy the Sea to Sky from afar, to explore later and heed the recommendations of Dr. Bonnie Henry to: stay local and avoid non-essential travel."

To that end, starting May 15, officers will be increasing their numbers in the backcountry, on Crown land, on waterways including Howe Sound, in closed and open provincial and municipal parks.

Officers say they’ll be checking drivers and vehicles along Highway 99.

They’ll also be cracking down on overnight camping, which is not allowed at this time.
