Squamish Today—Sept. 24: Recycle depot finally set to open this week

Enjoy the sun today, while it lasts, folks. 

Environment Canada says we should expect a mix of sun and cloud today.

We will see a high of 22 C and a low down to 14 C overnight.

Humidity will hit 91% today, meaning that is the percentage of water vapour in the atmosphere. 

Tonight, things start to turn, with a 40% chance of showers late this evening and after midnight. Rain will begin after midnight, with a total amount from five to 10 mm.

Looking ahead

There will be clouds and rain for the rest of the week, through Sunday, with temperatures in the low to mid-teens.

Depot open!

The new Squamish DOX recycle depot is finally going to open. 

Recycle BC says that the Recycling Depot will open on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 40446 Government Road.

It will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

"This new facility will offer the residents of Squamish and the surrounding areas a more convenient and efficient way for residents to manage their recyclables, making it easier than ever to contribute to our community's sustainability efforts," reads the Recycle BC Post.

Spit Road closure

With kiting season over, the Squamish Training Berm (Spit Road), will now be closed until Nov. 15, as Squamish River Watershed Society (SRWS) crews install a third large fish-friendly box culvert.

"This feature will replace the current undersized culvert, which will improve fish access and allow freshwater to transfer into the central estuary channel from the Squamish River," reads a SRWS post.

The work is part of the Central Estuary Restoration Project.

The seawater temperature in Howe Sound is expected to drop to 13.1 C in the next 10 days.

The September average water temperature in Howe Sound is 15.6 C, the minimum temperature is 12.4 C, and the maximum is 20.3 C.

The sea salinity in Howe Sound is 27.32‰, while the average salinity of the World Ocean is 35‰.

Events to note

There's always something going on in this town. Here are some events that stand out to us:

Sept. 24, get your game on at D&D Night at Arrow Wood Games, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

"The Arrow Wood Adventurers' Guild is seeking new recruits. If you've faced a few monsters or dabbled in magic, now's the time to sharpen your sword, dust off your spellbook, and step into the heart of a thrilling new Dungeons & Dragons campaign."

Sept. 29, put on your gumboots and head to Squamish Rivers Day, 2024, starting at 1000 Midnight Way, Brackendale. The event is on from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

"To honour our beautiful rivers and all the life it brings, we will be planting around the new fish pond at the hatchery. Planting will start at 10 a.m. and we will gather for a BBQ afterwards (~12 p.m.). Limited tours of the hatchery will be available throughout the day," reads the listing.

Oct. 3Max Ribner - Resilient Beings will play at Squamish United Church, located at 38014 Fourth Ave, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

"Join us for a beautiful evening of music, song, prayer," reads the listing.

Highway 99 issues to note

Highway 99, expect mowing between Sea View Drive and Alpha Lake Rd for 61.5 km (2 km south of Squamish to Whistler). The work is ongoing until Thursday, Sept. 26. The work is planned from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Watch for slow moving vehicle. 

Also on highway 99, in both directions, line painting is planned between Alice Lake Rd and Alpha Lake Rd for 25.6 km (4 km north of Squamish to Whistler),  until the end of today, Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Lane closures in both directions planned. Watch for traffic control personnel. 

Again, on Highway 99, southbound, expect roadside brushing between Alpha Lake Rd and Callaghan Valley Rd (Whistler), until the end of today, Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The right lane will be closed. 

Gas prices

Regular gas in Squamish is going for 171.9 cents per litre today at Squamish Valley Gas Bar, at 9001 Valley Dr.

In Whistler, you can expect to pay the same, 172.9/L.

In Pemberton, gas is selling for the cheapest, 171.9/L at AC Gas, located at 7432 Prospect St.

According to GasBuddy, the least expensive gas today in B.C. is again in Grand Forks, where you can fill up for 143.9/L, at Super Save Gas located at 773 Central Ave.
