Squamish Today—Sept. 12: Did you feel the earthquake at 9:05 a.m.?

Did you feel it? 

There was a 2.9-magnitude earthquake this morning at 9:05 a.m.

The quake hit 34 kilometres west-northwest of Squamish, at a depth of 3.5 kilometres, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior Earthquake Hazards Program.

This is also a good time to remind locals to make sure they are prepared for any other emergency. Check out the District of Squamish's site for tips.

As for the weather, today, we will see a mix of sun and cloud; expect a high of 21 C, dropping down to 13 C overnight, according to Environment Canada.

Looking ahead

Friday, the forecast is for the day to be overcast, hitting a high of 18 C, and a low down to 13 C overnight.

Saturday, we will see rain, with a high of 15 C, dropping to 13 C at night.

Sunday, for the Terry Fox Run, we will see a mix of sun and cloud, with a high of 19 C and a low down to 11 C.

Campfire bans lifted

Despite the fall-like weather, there are still currently 213 wildfires burning in B.C., as of Sept. 12, down from 216 yesterday.

As of Aug. 26, the BC Wildfire Service Coastal Fire Centre and the District of Squamish lifted their bans on Category 1 campfires in the Coastal Fire Centre area, and within the District boundaries.

Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited, including the use of fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, burn barrels, burn cages and air curtain burners.

The following are never allowed in Squamish:

  • Fires in any public space, including forests, riverbanks, mountainsides, beaches
  • Open Air Burning, including but not limited to: yard waste, garden debris and construction materials

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire, or open burning violation, call 911 if within the municipal boundaries, or, if outside the district, call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone. 

Still no kiting at oceanfront beach

In the wake of a man's death, while he was kiteboarding off of Sp'akw'us Feather Park on July 1, the District of Squamish has temporarily closed the watersports beach to kiteboarding while an investigation into the incident is underway.

"Kites are being restricted out of caution to ensure public safety. Wingfoiling and windsurfing continue to be permitted," a District release states.

Access to Pepahím̓ (Spit Island) for kiteboarding is available through a shuttle operated by the Squamish Windsports Society.

Shuttles take place daily between noon and 7 p.m., with access to the shuttle launch a short walk from the Sp’akw’us Feather parking lot.

Low tide today was at 6:59 a.m. (Height:1.43 metres); the next high tide is at 3:46 p.m. (4.12 m), according to tides.today.

The final low tide is at 8:15 p.m. (3.78 m). The final high tide is at 11:24 (3.88 m).

Seawater temp

According to the seatemperature.info, water temperature in Howe Sound today is 17.3 C. This is based on historical data over a decade. The warmest water recorded on this day in Howe Sound was 17.6 C, recorded in 2013. The coldest sea water temperature recorded was in 2010 at 14.4 C.

Sea water temperature in Howe Sound is expected to drop to 14.7 C in the next 10 days. The September average water temperature in Howe Sound is 15.6 C, the minimum temperature is 12.4 C, and the maximum is 20.3 C.

Events to note

There's always something going on in this town. Here are some events that stood out to us:

Sept. 13 catch Warhammer Game Night at Arrow Wood Games, at 38157 2nd Ave., from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
"The local Warhammer community is hosting a Kill Team League, but all players are invited to come and enjoy other games like Warcry or Necromunda. Whether you're here for the league or just to chat and play casually, this welcoming group is excited to grow the community," reads the listing.

Also on Sept. 13, check out Captain Fantasy: Boognish In The Mountains at Trickster's s Hideout, at 38005 Cleveland Avenue, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. 

"Ahoy, rock enthusiasts! Prepare to embark on a wild musical voyage as The Captain navigates its ship of rock and debauchery up the majestic Howe Sound bringing the unrivalled glory of Ween to Squamish," reads the listing.

Sept. 14, catch Groove Garden at Trickster's Hideout, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. 

"An enchanting evening where we’ll transform the venue into a stunning garden oasis filled with vibrant flowers and lush greenery," reads the listing.

Sept. 15, there's a Pokemon Drop-In at Arrow Wood Games, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. 

"Calling all Pokémon fans! Every Sunday, join Arrow Wood Games for a fun-filled 2-hour Pokémon Trade & Play event. Bring your cards to trade or challenge fellow players in exciting battles," reads the listing.

•Sept. 21, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. put on your dancing shoes for Swing & Salsa Social Dance, at the Squamish Dance Centre, located at 38924 Queens Way.

"This is a mixed of Swing & Latin music social dance event," reads the listing.

•Sept. 29, put on your gumboots and head to Squamish Rivers Day 2024, starting at 1000 Midnight Way, Brackendale. The event is on from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

"To honour of our beautiful rivers and all the life it brings, we will be planting around the new fish pond at the hatchery. Planting will start at 10:00am and we will gather for a BBQ afterwards (~12pm). Limited tours of the hatchery will be available throughout the day," reads the listing.

Driving issues to note

Downtown

• There's intermittent single-lane closures, sidewalk closures and detours along Cleveland Avenue, Loggers Lane, and Pemberton Avenue until Sept. 14.

"This traffic disruption will occur on weekdays only, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., to accommodate crews monitoring wells. Signage and detour wayfinding will be in place where traffic disruptions occur," the District says.

Highway work to watch for

On Highway 99
, northbound, watch for line painting, which is planned (again!) at Alice Lake Rd, through until today at 5:30 p.m. The left lane will be closed. 

•Nearby, on Highway 99, northbound, more line painting is planned between Alice Lake Rd and Daisy Lake Rd for 3.3 km (1 to 4 km north of Squamish). The work is set to end at 5:30 p.m. The left lane will be closed.

On Highway 99, in both directions, watch for roadside brushing between Callaghan Valley Rd and Alpha Lake Rd (Whistler). The work will end at  5:30 p.m. today. The southbound traffic will move through northbound left lane. Watch for traffic control.

Gas prices

Regular gas in Squamish is going for 171.9 cents per litre today at the Squamish Valley Gas Bar, at 9001 Valley Dr.

Gas in Whistler is going for 172.9/L at the Co-op at 2101 Lake Placid Rd. 

In Pemberton, petrol is at the pump for 172.9/L at most local stations.

The least expensive gas we could find today in B.C. was in Salmon Arm,  where you can fill up for 149.9/L, at Super Save Gas at 50 3rd St NW, according to GasBuddy.
