Good Monday to you, Squamish.

We will see periods of drizzle today, clearing in the afternoon; expect a high of 24 C, dropping down to 11 C overnight, according to Environment Canada.

What is drizzle, exactly?

According to the Environment Canada definition, drizzle is "fairly uniform" precipitation made up of fine drops of water that are less than 0.5 millimetres in diameter.

"Drizzle drops are too small to cause appreciable ripples on the surface of still water. The drops appear almost to float in the air, thus making visible even slight movements of air."

We will also see some more light wildfire smoke today, especially in the morning.

Fog patches are expected to develop after midnight tonight

Yesterday's hot spot

Unlike on Saturday, we weren't the corridor hot spot yesterday.

According to Squamish meteorologist Jason Ross, the hottest place in the corridor on Sunday was in Pemberton, which hit 28.3 C.

Squamish's high was 25.5 C at the airport; at Pam Rocks, on Howe Sound, the high was 20.5  C.

Whistler had a high of 24.5 C, while in the Callaghan Valley it was 23.6 C.

Looking ahead

Ross says that two weak systems, one moving in today and the other on Wednesday, will bring clouds, cooler temperatures, and a chance of showers to the area.

High pressure will rebuild on Thursday and Friday, with drier conditions.

"Welcome to fall," he said.

Squamish will see a high of 22 C on Tuesday, dipping down to 12 C overnight.

Wednesday, expect a high of 19 C and a low down to 11 C at night.

Thursday, the forecast is for sunshine, with a high of 20 C and a low down to 11 C.

Friday will be a carbon copy of Thursday, with a little cloud thrown in for good measure.

Campfire bans lifted

There are currently 219 wildfires burning in B.C., as of Sept. 9, down from 220 yesterday.

As of Aug. 26, the BC Wildfire Service Coastal Fire Centre and the District of Squamish lifted their bans on Category 1 campfires in the Coastal Fire Centre area, and within the District boundaries.

Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited, including the use of fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, burn barrels, burn cages and air curtain burners.

The following are never allowed in Squamish:

  • Fires in any public space, including forests, riverbanks, mountainsides, beaches
  • Open Air Burning, including but not limited to: yard waste, garden debris and construction materials

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire, or open burning violation, call 911 if within the municipal boundaries, or, if outside the district, call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone.

Still no kiting at oceanfront beach

In the wake of a man's death, while he was kiteboarding off of Sp'akw'us Feather Park on July 1, the District of Squamish has temporarily closed the watersports beach to kiteboarding while an investigation into the incident is underway.

"Kites are being restricted out of caution to ensure public safety. Wingfoiling and windsurfing continue to be permitted," a District release states.

Access to Pepahím̓ (Spit Island) for kiteboarding is available through a shuttle operated by the Squamish Windsports Society.

Shuttles take place daily between noon and 7 p.m., with access to the shuttle launch a short walk from the Sp’akw’us Feather parking lot.

The Squamish Windsports Society kiting season ends Sept. 15.

Local driving issues to note

Downtown
• The District of Squamish says that the Squamish Farmers' Market and Copper Coil parking lot will be temporarily closed for realignment and painting until Sept. 10.

"This updated design will accommodate more parking, including additional motorcycle spaces, and will feature a more efficient layout," the District said in a public post.

• There's intermittent single-lane closures, sidewalk closures and detours along Cleveland Avenue, Loggers Lane, and Pemberton Avenue until Sept. 14.

"This traffic disruption will occur on weekdays only, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., to accommodate crews monitoring wells. Signage and detour wayfinding will be in place where traffic disruptions occur," the District says.
