Squamish Today—July 2: What you need to know to start your day

Discover today's moon phase, tides, seawater temp, wind, and learn what an ICBC survey found were the driving habits respondents thought others should improve.

Is it Monday or Tuesday? In this post long-weekend haze, no one is sure.

What we do know is that July 2 will be mainly cloudy, clearing late this morning, according to Environment Canada.

We will see a high of 22 C and an overnight low down to 10 C.

When the sun is out, the UV index will be 7, or high.

In Canada, the index ranges from 1 to 11; the higher the number, the stronger the sun’s UV rays.

When the index is high, like it is forecast for today, that means you need to protect your skin and eyes.

Sunrise & sunset

Sunrise on July 2 was at 5:10 a.m. Sunset will be at 9:23 p.m.

Moon phase

The moon is in its waning crescent phase today.

According to NASA: "This silver sliver of a Moon occurs when the illuminated half of the Moon faces mostly away from Earth, with only a tiny portion visible to us from our planet."

The moon's illumination is currently 13.13%, meaning that is the percentage of the moon illuminated by the sun, according to phasesmoon.com.

What is a moon phase?

"The moon's phases are determined by the relative positions of the Earth, moon, and sun. As the moon orbits the Earth, the amount of the moon's illuminated surface visible from the Earth changes. This change in the moon's appearance is known as the moon's phase," reads the phasesmoon.com site.

The moon is currently located in the constellation of Taurus.

It is 372,636.48 kilometres from Earth.

Moonrise was at 2:05 a.m., moonset will be at 6:50 p.m.

"Both moonrise and moonset are defined as the moments when the upper edge of the moon's disk touches the horizon," reads the explanation on www.timeanddate.com.

The next new moon is on July 3.

The next full moon will be on July 20, at 9:27 p.m.

Tricky driving?

Do you avoid parallel parking downtown in Squamish? If you do, you aren't alone.

According to a new ICBC survey,  59% of  drivers in the province who were surveyed said parallel parking was the most difficult manoeuvre to learn when they started to drive. About 40% of drivers said they still avoid parallel parking when possible.

In a distant second on the list of driving actions respondents avoid was backing into a parking stall, which 20% said they avoid.

When asked to consider the driving of others, survey respondents said that leaving adequate distance when driving behind another vehicle, giving space to other drivers wanting to merge onto the highway, and completely stopping at a stop sign were the top of actions that drivers thought other drivers needed to brush up on the most.

The Crown corporation has a new video series on Instagram and has produced YouTube videos with tips on these and other manoeuvres that came up as tricky in the survey.

Wind:

Have a great back-to-work after a long weekend day, Squamish!
