Squamish Today—Oct. 3: Be extra bear aware in the estuary

Everything you need to know before you start your day in Squamish.

Good Thursday to you, Squamish.

Be bear aware if you are headed to the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh/Squamish River Estuary today, folks.

The District says that there were two recent human-bear incidents in the popular walking area.

"Both incidents were surprise encounters, and given the increased bear activity leading into winter hibernation, we urge the public to be cautious and 'bear smart' when using the trails," the District posted on its social media channels.

"Make noise or clap your hands, especially when your line of sight is compromised. Remember to keep dogs on a leash and slow down when turning corners to avoid surprising a bear that may not be aware of your presence."

For bears and people Environment Canada says today will be a nice one; it will be mainly sunny, with fog patches dissipating this morning.

We will see a high of 18 C and a low down to 8 C overnight.

Looking ahead

It is a mixed bag for the next few days.

We can expect rain on Friday, showers on Saturday and a mix of sun and cloud on Sunday and Monday.

Depot open!

The new Squamish DOX recycle depot is finally open.

The Recycle BC  Recycling Depot opened Sept. 26 at 40446 Government Road.

It is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Spit Road closure

The Squamish Training Berm (Spit Road), is now closed until Nov. 15, as Squamish River Watershed Society (SRWS) crews install a third large fish-friendly box culvert.

"This feature will replace the current undersized culvert, which will improve fish access and allow freshwater to transfer into the central estuary channel from the Squamish River," reads a SRWS post.

The work is part of the Central Estuary Restoration Project.

Sunrise & sunset

Sunrise on Oct. 3 was at 7:17 a.m. Sunset today will be at 6:45 p.m.

Moon phase

The moon is in its new moon phase.

"When the moon is at its new phase it is positioned between the sun and the Earth and appears in close proximity to where the sun is in our sky. So a new moon appears to rise and set with the sun and is invisible because sunlight is falling on that part of the moon that is turned away from us," reads space.com.

The moon's illumination is currently 0.63%, meaning that is the percentage of the moon illuminated by the sun.

The moon is currently located in the constellation of Pisces, according to phasesmoon.com.

It is 405,219.79 km from Earth.

Moonrise is at 8:16 a.m.; moonset is at 6:56 p.m.

Tides

The next low tide today is at 12:41 p.m. (height: 2.39 metres); the next high tide today is at 6:33 p.m. (height:4.26 m), according to tides.today.
