Good Sunday to you, Squamish!

Environment Canada says we should expect it to be mainly cloudy today, with a  60% chance of showers.

We will see a high of 18 C and a low down to 13 C overnight.

Humidity will hit 89% today, meaning that is the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere.

It is fall!

Fall begins with the autumnal equinox.

In the Northern Hemisphere that was this morning—on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 5:43 a.m.

But what is an equinox, anyway?

"There are only two moments each year when neither pole points toward the sun, and the sun lies directly above Earth’s equator. These moments are the equinoxes," reads www.timeanddate.com.

The March equinox happens sometime between March 19 and 21. The September equinox occurs sometime between Sept. 21 and 24.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the March equinox is also known as the spring or vernal equinox; the September equinox can be called the fall or autumnal equinox.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the names are the other way around."

Looking ahead

There's a chance of showers on Monday, as well; Tuesday is looking promising, and likely the best day of the week to get outside, with a mix of sun and cloud expected.

Rain is on the agenda for the rest of the week.

Campfire bans lifted

As of Aug. 26, the BC Wildfire Service Coastal Fire Centre and the District of Squamish lifted their bans on Category 1 campfires in the Coastal Fire Centre area, and within the District boundaries.

As of last Wednesday, there is no longer a Coastal Fire Centre ban on Category 2 and Category 3 open burning, as defined in the Wildfire Regulation. This is for outside of District boundaries, within the corridor.

Category 2 includes:

  • Material concurrently in 2 piles each not exceeding 2 metres in height and 3 metres in width
  • Stubble or grass over an area that does not exceed 0.2 hectares

Category 3  includes:

  • Material concurrently in 3 or more piles each not exceeding 2 metres in height and 3 metres in width
  • Material in one or more piles each exceeding 2 metres in height or 3 metres in width
  • One or more windrows, none of which exceed 200 metres in length or 15 metres in width
  • Stubble or grass over an area exceeding 0.2 hectares

The following are never allowed in Squamish:

  • Fires in any public space, including forests, riverbanks, mountainsides, beaches
  • Open Air Burning, including but not limited to: yard waste, garden debris and construction materials

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire, or open burning violation, call 911 if within the municipal boundaries, or, if outside the district, call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone.

Spit Road closure

With kiting season over, the Squamish Training Berm (Spit Road), will now be closed until Nov. 15, as Squamish River Watershed Society (SRWS) crews install a third large fish-friendly box culvert.

"This feature will replace the current undersized culvert, which will improve fish access and allow freshwater to transfer into the central estuary channel from the Squamish River," reads a SRWS post.

The work is part of the Central Estuary Restoration Project.
