Squamish Today—Sept. 26: Check out this lenticular cloud formation

Good Thursday to you, Squamish!

First, we are aware of a rockfall that occurred off the Stawamus Chief at about 12:15 a.m. this morning. 

It rumbled for about 10 seconds, according to locals, and was even felt downtown.

Rockfalls are common off of the Stawamus Chief. 

We will be following up with more of a story later today.

Environment Canada says it will be cloudy with a 30% chance of showers this morning. The rain will begin early this afternoon.

We will see a high of 14 C and a low down to 11 C overnight.

Humidity will hit 87% today, meaning that is the percentage of water vapour in the atmosphere. 

Tonight, the rain will end near midnight, followed by clouds and a 60% chance of showers.

Looking ahead

Friday, we can expect a chance of showers; the weekend will be mostly wet and cloudy, too.

Depot open!

The new Squamish DOX recycle depot is finally going to open. 

Recycle BC says that the Recycling Depot will open on today, Sept. 26 at 40446 Government Road.

It will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

"This new facility will offer the residents of Squamish and the surrounding areas a more convenient and efficient way for residents to manage their recyclables, making it easier than ever to contribute to our community's sustainability efforts," reads the Recycle BC Post.

Spit Road closure

With kiting season over, the Squamish Training Berm (Spit Road), will now be closed until Nov. 15, as Squamish River Watershed Society (SRWS) crews install a third large fish-friendly box culvert.

"This feature will replace the current undersized culvert, which will improve fish access and allow freshwater to transfer into the central estuary channel from the Squamish River," reads a SRWS post.

The work is part of the Central Estuary Restoration Project.

Based on our historical data over a period of 10 years, the warmest water in this day in Howe Sound was recorded in 2022 and was 15.2 C, and the coldest was recorded in 2008 at 13.2 C.

The seawater temperature in Howe Sound is expected to drop to 12.9 C in the next 10 days.

The September average water temperature in Howe Sound is 15.6 C, the minimum temperature is 12.4 C, and the maximum is 20.3 C.

The sea salinity in Howe Sound is 27.32‰, while the average salinity of the World Ocean is 35‰.

Events to note

There's always something going on in this town. Here are some events that stand out to us:

Sept. 27, catch the Big Fat Comedy Show with Jeremy Meakins at Trickster's Hideout from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. 

"Squamish’s favourite night of stand-up, The Big Fat Comedy Show, is back with a stacked lineup to get your fall started with some big fat laughs," reads the listing.

Sept. 29, put on your gumboots and head to Squamish Rivers Day, 2024, starting at 1000 Midnight Way, Brackendale. The event is on from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

"To honour our beautiful rivers and all the life it brings, we will be planting around the new fish pond at the hatchery. Planting will start at 10 a.m. and we will gather for a BBQ afterwards (~12 p.m.). Limited tours of the hatchery will be available throughout the day," reads the listing.

Oct. 3Max Ribner - Resilient Beings will play at Squamish United Church, located at 38014 Fourth Ave, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

"Join us for a beautiful evening of music, song, prayer," reads the listing.

Highway 99 issues to note
 

Today, on Highway 99, northbound, watch for roadside brushing between Alice Lake Rd and Daisy Lake Rd (9 km south of Whistler). The work is planned from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 a.m. The right lane will be closed.

On Highway 99 today, watch for mowing between Sea View Dr and Alpha Lake Rd for 61.5 km (2 km south of Squamish to Whistler), from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Watch for slow moving vehicle.

Highway 99, starting Tuesday, Oct, 1, in both directions, expect utility work between Finch Dr and Industrial Way for 93.7 km (Squamish to Pemberton). The work will last until Friday, Oct. 4. There will be a lane closure as crews perform underground utility sweeps. Only one lane will be closed at a time.

•Ending today, on Highway 99, expect mowing between Sea View Drive and Alpha Lake Rd for 61.5 km (2 km south of Squamish to Whistler). The work is planned to happen from  7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Watch for slow moving vehicle. 

Gas prices

The cheapest regular gas in Squamish is going for 169.9 cents per litre today at the Shell, located at 1580 BC-99.

According to GasBuddy, the least expensive gas today in B.C. is in Dewdney, where you can fill up for 146.9/L, at the Centex, located at 36671 Lougheed Hwy.
