Squamish Valley Agricultural Plan food for thought

First community engagement session on March 10
Squamish Valley

Green thumbs and people interested in growing their own food in the Squamish Valley will soon be able to learn about the area’s upcoming agricultural plan.

“Our goal is to develop a strong and vibrant food system in this part of the region that will reflect the vision and aspirations of our residents,” Squamish Mayor Karen Elliott said in a press release.

“The Squamish Valley Agriculture Plan will help to identify where we need to effect policy changes and how we can support agricultural uses throughout the valley that bring economic opportunity and social benefit for all of our farmers and residents.”

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional Districts and the District of Squamish are working together to develop a plan with the input of farmers, ranchers and health professionals, as well as locals.

Since the project was announced in October 2018, a team of consultants from Upland Agricultural Consulting and the Whistler Centre for Sustainability has been formed to draft a plan.

The first opportunity to hear more about the development of the plan and give input will be on March 10 at the Brackendale Art Gallery. Residents are invited to drop in between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Presentations will be at 6 p.m. Anyone who can’t attend can respond to the survey by March 31 at bit.ly/SqValleyAgPlan.

*This story has been updated to reflect the Squamish Valley Agricultural Plan is still in development, and a draft is not yet available to the public.
