Squeaky clean race comes to town

Community

Brackendale resident Glenn Worrad said he has fond memories of building rudimentary carts during childhood soapbox derbies. And ever since his son was a toddler, he's wanted to renew those memories.

On Sept. 3, Worrad will hold what he hopes is the first annual Squamish Soap Box Derby with all proceeds going to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

"My daughter has had diabetes since she was 12, my father has it, my brother-in-law has it," said Worrad of his choice of charities. "I thought a soap box derby is perfect for this community."

Organization is still under way, but Worrad is asking members of the community for help. Volunteers are required to register participants, marshal races and build carts that spectators may use for a fee. Carts are unpowered, relying completely on gravity for propulsion, and Worrad said the designs are simple.

"As long as there's steering and brakes, you're good to go."

The event - intended to be more of a festival then a race - will include prizes not only for the fastest cart, but the flashiest and the best racer's costume. Talks with local charity organizations may also lead to various entertainers and concession stands showing up at the race's Ross Road location.

Although traditionally a children's event, this soapbox race is open to the young and the young at heart. The cost to participate is $20, and for $5 spectators who feel their own need for speed will get to drive carts provided for their benefit.
