The District of Squamish is warning of an active bear den with cubs very close to trails in the Mount Crumpit area of Squamish.
According to the municipality, they were alerted to the bear family by the Conservation Officers Service.
"For the safety of the bear family and your own, please avoid using the trails in this area," reads the Dec. 24th District post on their social channels. "Always be cautious while using recreational trails, as bears can still be active in dens. Always keep dogs on leash while recreating in bear country."
According to the Yellowstone Bear World site, if disturbed by loud noises or approaching danger, hibernating bears can immediately wake up to defend themselves or their cubs.
"Bears take this winter break to conserve energy due to the lack of food available during cold temperatures," reads the Fresh Tracks Canada site.
The provincial government says most black bear dens are in or under large-diameter trees, snags, logs, or stumps.
"And may be up to 25 metres above the ground."
