Riding the wave of the pandemic hasn't been easy, and another event is being washed away — sort of.
The annual Squamish Polar Bear Swim held each year at the oceanfront has been cancelled for New Year's Day 2021, due to the pandemic.
But all is not lost.
The event is being kept afloat, from a distance.
Organizer Mike Wight is asking those so inclined to take a dip, with your bubble-people nearby, at some point on New Year's Day, though not at noon.
Choose any body of water you like, he says.
Participants are encouraged to post their photos (proof?) on the cancelled event page, "Squamish Polar Bear Swim 2020/21"
(Send photos in to The Chief too and we will share them all day: [email protected].)
The local polar bear swim started as a small group of friends running into Howe Sound in 2012 and grew from there. Organizers have never had to cancel or miss it since, until this year.
"We will be swimming for sure, but not at midday," Wight said.
