Thieves raid storage units

Briefs from the RCMP and Conservation Office

On Aug. 7, police responded to a complex on Government Road were several garages and storage units had been pried open. Four mountain bikes were among the articles stolen. The bikes and equipment stolen were valued at $10,000. Bikes stolen were a Norco Six One white 21 speed Mountain Bike, a red and silver Gary Fischer 21 speed mountain bike, a orange woman's Brodie Bruzza mountain bike and a grey Rocky Mountain Switch 21 speed mountain bike. Still under investigation.

Suspect flees

On Aug. 7 at 2:13 a.m. members attempted to stop a blue Toyota Matrix at a road check on Diamond Road near Diamond Head Road. The vehicle approached at a high rate of speed, failed to stop for members at the road check and drove through a stop sign at a high rate of speed. Another officer located the vehicle on The Boulevard and the 20-year-old male driver displayed symptoms of impairment. The driver was arrested and returned to the detachment and breath readings twice the legal limit were registered on the breathalyzer. The driver was released on a promise to appear in Provincial Court to answer to a charge of impaired driving and dangerous driving on Sept 23.

Abandoned vehicle driver located

On Aug. 9 at 12:10 a.m. police responded to Centennial Way and Highway 99 and located a vehicle that had driven over a cement traffic barrier and knocked over a street sign. All of the air bags deployed and the vehicle a 2001 Kia Rio sustained significant damage. A search of the vehicle located receipts for a local campground where police located the driver. The driver will appear in Provincial Court on Sept. 30 to answer to charges of failing to remain at the scene of an accident, driving without due care and attention and driving without a valid drivers licence.

Driver charged with hit and run

On Aug. 7 at 2:32 a.m., a member stopped a 2008 Dodge pick up on Mamquam Road for having no taillights. While speaking with the driver, who displayed symptoms of impairment by alcohol, the member was advised that the vehicle and driver had just hit a parked vehicle on Highlands Way North prior to being stopped. Damage to both vehicles was evident and the 29-year-old driver was arrested for hit and run and impaired driving. The male was returned to the detachment and refused to supply a breath sample. The male was held in custody until sober and then released on a promise to appear for court on Oct. 7 to face charges of impaired driving, refusing to supply a breath sample and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

Driver flips vehicle

On Aug. 10 at 2:29 p.m. members were dispatched to a flipped vehicle on Highway 99 near the Conroy Forest Service Road. A 2009 Dodge Caliber lost control and rolled over, three occupants were treated by B.C. Ambulance and Fire Rescue crews for minor injuries. The three were visiting from France. Still under investigation. Speed relative to the conditions is believed the cause.

Youth loses control of vehicle

On Aug. 10 at 4:57 p.m. police, fire and ambulance attended to a roll over collision on Highway 99 near Windy Point. A 2007 Hyundai Accent lost control and rolled over, the 19-year-old driver and a 15-year-old passenger were transported to hospital with minor injuries. The driver was issued a violation ticket for Speed Relative to Conditions.

Smash and grab

On Aug. 10, overnight suspect(s) smashed the passenger side window of a vehicle parked on Wingtip Place and stole a purse containing a passport, identification, credit cards and cash.

Impaired driver charged

On Aug. 6 at 11:45 p.m. a white 2003 Chevy pick up was checked on Government Road for a traffic violation. The 27-year-old driver showed signs of impairment and failed a roadside screening for alcohol. The driver was returned to the detachment and registered two breath readings twice the legal limit. Woman charged for lighting campfire

On Aug. 3, conservation officers conducting patrols to enforce the recent campfire ban investigated a campfire near the 9 mile bridge on the Mamquam FSR. A Vancouver female was charged for lighting a fire against the restriction.

Quad drivers charged

On Aug. 3, conservation officers stopped two Squamish males who had been operating quads on the Indian Arm Forest Service Road. Both males were charged under various sections of the Forest and Range Practices Act.

Business fails wildlife protection order

On Aug. 4, conservation officers conducted an inspection of a business on Industrial Way near Highway 99 following the issuance of a dangerous wildlife protection order. Charges for failing to comply with a dangerous wildlife protection order are pending.

Barbed hook angler charged

On Aug. 6, conservation officers received a complaint via the RAPP line that persons were using barbed hooks and bait on the Mamquam River. Conservation officers attended the reported location and upon investigation, charged one Vancouver male with offences under the Fisheries Act.

Bear believed injured

On Aug. 7, conservation officers attended complaints of an injured bear on Buckley Avenue. The bear was immobilized and removed from the area. A cursory assessment of the bear's condition revealed no obvious injury and the bear was relocated and released.
