Two kayakers were rescued near Porteau Cove on Monday afternoon.

Brandon Austin, the maritime search and rescue co-ordinator of the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre, said the call for help came in around 2:30 p.m. Speaking around 3:30 p.m., Austin said the two kayakers had been taken to shore.

"A couple of kayakers capsized and were hanging onto their kayaks. They called for help," he said. "We sent the auxiliary from Squamish (RCM-SAR Station 4) as well as the auxiliary from Horseshoe Bay, and there was a search and rescue military helicopter training in the area that responded. We also tasked the Kitsilano Coast Guard as a backup.

"[The kayakers] have since been recovered and have been taken to shore and have met with BC Ambulance."

Austin said while he was unaware of and, regardless, could not release information about the pair's status, he said that responders were on the phone with them during the rescue.
