Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR) announced that they are one of the two finalists for the Land Rover 2023 Defender Service Awards.

Squamish SAR post on its Instagram account that it received word that it was one of the finalists in the Search, Rescue and Emergency Services category and they would be going to Texas for the final reveal. The communications director for the organization, Christy Allan, said the other finalist in the category is Texas Search and Rescue (TEXSAR).

“We are thrilled,” Allan said about hearing they were one of the finalists on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

Allan said earning a spot in the final two was a testament to the support of the community, especially coming from a relatively small community compared to other nominees.

“The whole Sea to Sky community and beyond was just amazing,” she said.

Allan said further details about who will represent Squamish SAR in Texas will be announced later on, but the official announcement for the winner will be announced on Nov. 12. If Squamish SAR prevails, they will be awarded a Land Rover Defender 130 and $25,000 from their category sponsor Pelican.

Squamish SAR was the only Canadian representative in the Search, Rescue and Emergency Services category and one of two Canadian organizations nominated for awards in general. Honour House Society based in New Westminster, B.C. was nominated in the Veterans and Civil Servant Outreach category.

Last year’s winner in the Search, Rescue and Emergency Services category was a Canadian organization as Sauvetage Bénévole Outaouais – Ottawa Volunteer Search and Rescue (SBO-OVSAR) took home the prize.

Allan said SBO-OVSAR had also been really supportive in sharing the word that Squamish SAR was up for the award.
