Back in the swing of things - in record time

The Squamish Golf and Country Club has broken a record - this is the earliest the course has opened for regular season play. The greens officially opened on Feb. 9. Previously, the earliest opening was Feb. 13 in 1998 following El Niño.

The Squamish Golf and Country Club has broken a record - this is the earliest the course has opened for regular season play.

The greens officially opened on Feb. 9. Previously, the earliest opening was Feb. 13 in 1998 following El Niño. There were several golfers waiting to hit some balls at 10:30 a.m. on opening day.

"The greens are in great shape," said Brian Avey, the manager for the golf and country club. "It's a frantic moment to see how your greens look."

He said the fairways were green, and the grass doesn't have a lot of dead spots or burn patches.

The mild winter prolonged the golf season for the country club. The greens were covered right before Christmas and through the cold snap in early January before they were uncovered again.

"The weather was very kind to us here in Squamish," Avey said. "We have the longest golf season in Sea to Sky Country."

Should the weather turn white, the golf course would close its greens until golfing conditions were favourable again.

An early start to the season bodes well.

"It's good, it's good for the club," Avey said. "And it's good to see the course in good shape."

Course condition rates will apply because of the early startup.
