Cloverdale C4 took the gold while Vancouver C4 took silver at the Squamish Atom C New Year’s Tournament - 2019 tournament.
Langley C1 took bronze.
But there was more during the event, which took place from Jan. 2 to 4.
Also up for grabs was the Community Spirit Award, which was won by both the Port Moody Panthers C3 and the Squamish Eagles C2.
The award celebrates community and team spirit.
“This team has been mentioned by four different members of our community and are a proud example of teamwork, sportsmanship and stewardship,” reads the decision on why the Panthers were picked.
Event organizer Lisa Turpin said that the Eagles were picked after officials tallied up penalty minutes and found they were the lowest.
But the results weren’t the only thing that made the event great, according to organizer Lisa Turpin.
“I truly believe youth hockey tournaments are important to everyone, or I wouldn’t help out,” said Turpin in an email conversation.
“Having had a son participate in many, these give players time to really bond as a team and gel, but also to view the world outside their own bubbles. To explore what is important and other ways of doing things and working as a team collective. For many players tournaments form the best memories of their hockey experiences.”
Turpin said 149 players from across the Lower Mainland came to town for a chance at getting some of the glory.
“So many tie games that wound up in shoot outs and many nails bitten,” she remarked.
The Squamish Nation also presided over parts of the event, opening up some of the headlining games. Turpin also extended thanks to all the participants, volunteers, sponsors and former director David Knight. The next Squamish Minor Hockey Association event is expected to happen from Feb. 15 to 18, where the town will be playing host to 16 teams.
