A Squamish Eagles hockey team is the recipient of a RONA sponsorship.

The home hardware chain has launched a new sponsorship program that supports select employee's kids' hockey teams.

Three teams were chosen in the Vancouver and coast-mountain region, including the Squamish boys' U13 team.

The sponsorship’s value is worth $4,000.

“There has been tremendous interest in the program throughout our network. 85 of our employees’ children have been chosen, in our corporate and affiliated stores, at our head office and in our distribution centres,” said J.P. Towner, president and chief executive officer of Rona, in a news release.

“Hockey brings people together, and this program allows us to bring hockey fever to life locally and improve access to sport for young Canadians.”

A total of 85 hockey teams will be sponsored in Canada, honouring the company's 85th anniversary.

In our region, the other two teams are the Rustlers of Maple Ridge and the Hollyburn Huskies of West Vancouver.

“We are very proud of this commitment to sports teams because they help shape our youth. At RONA, we want to empower communities to build their homes and dreams, and this program supports the dreams of many youths,” said Catherine Laporte, senior vice-president of marketing and customer experience.

The selected teams will receive funds to help them purchase equipment, reduce activity registration fees and take part in tournaments, among other things.

RONA will also provide players and their families with clothing featuring their respective team logos.
