Squamish riders ace Sea Otter

Rhys Verner continues his strong 2014 campaign with a first-place finish in the open men 18 and under Enduro race.

The annual jaunt to Monterey, Calif., for the Sea Otter Classic was a successful one for a handful of Squamish mountain bikers.
Competition got underway on Friday (April 11) for local riders, with Rhys Verner continuing his strong 2014 campaign with a first-place finish in the open men 18 and under Enduro race. Verner beat the second-place competitor by 11 seconds for the win.
Also competing on Friday was Quinn Moberg, who finished 45th in the men’s pro short track race.
Action continued on Saturday (April 12), with some of Squamish’s younger talent taking centre stage. Jackson Goldstone picked up first place in the 10 and under downhill race with a time of two minutes, 58.33 seconds and Holden Jones finished second in the 13 to 14 downhill race by posting a time of 2:29.88.
Seth Sherlock placed third in the 11 to 12 downhill division with a time of 2:55.34 and Bailey Goldstone finished fifth in the 14 and under girls downhill race (3:36.90). Also competing on Saturday was Arnau Muset, who placed 16th in the pro men’s pump park finals.
Sherlock and Jackson Goldstone continued their strong weekends on Sunday (April 13), finishing third and fourth, respectively, in the 11 to 12 boys dual slalom race. Luke Di Marzo had the fastest local time in the 17 to 18 men downhill race with a time of 2:23.57, with Verner finishing 15th (2:29.75).
Sunday also saw Jones return to action and finish 21st in the category three 13 to 14 boys cross country race and Lee Jackson place 25th in the pro men downhill race.
