An architect is floating the idea of constructing a series of huts along the Howe Sound Crest Trail.
“We envision a network of off-grid, sustainable alpine huts, each with six staff and up to 36 guests, linked by easy-to approach trails,” said Stephane Laroye, principal at Stephane Laroye Architect Inc., or SLA, in a news release.
The proposed huts, dubbed the High Alpine Hut Network, would be 15 kilometres apart and accessible from Cypress Mountain and the Sea to Sky Gondola.
Ideally, the huts would be staffed and give hikers a bed for the night, along with food and hot showers.
The huts could also serve as bases for search and rescue agencies, the company said.
SLA says it hopes to minimize its carbon footprint with a design that allows for passive and active solar energy collection, among other things.
The company has not secured a land lease tenure or funding for the proposed HAHN. "We are hoping to generate interest and attract potential partners," Laroye told The Chief.
Locally, the Laroye’s firm may be recognizable to anyone following recent developments happening in Squamish.
SLA is one of several architectural firms that’s been involved in the design of the Oceanfront development, which is being spearheaded by Squamish Cornerstone Developments.
