There's more to Squamish ecology — much more — just beneath the surface of the Howe Sound. Soon what lurks below will be brought to light in the form of a new online map.
Researchers from the David Suzuki Foundation and Ocean Wise are unveiling a map of Howe Sound's marine life in Squamish on Feb. 27. It has more than 140 layers of data, ranging from estuaries to eelgrass, the glass sponge reefs, herring spawning, and rocky reefs. The map will bring together the work of scientists, individuals, and government agencies in one platform for users to explore marine life, habitat and tidal action.
"We're excited to share our work with the community, and to discover additional local knowledge about ecological values," Bill Wareham, the science projects manager for the David Suzuki Foundation, said in a news release. "We're also hoping to hear residents' views regarding options for conservation measures in this area that could help ensure healthy marine life for the long term."
Besides the map, a spokesperson for Ocean Wise said they are continuing to analyze where habitat conditions can best support the Sound's recovery and conservation.
