SSISC receives $29K grant

Invasive species group AGM planned next week

The provincial government is providing $29,300 to the Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council (SSISC) to control the spread of invasive plants, West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Joan McIntyre announced last week.

The money will be invested in activities such as raising public awareness, surveying invasive plant populations and actively treating high-priority sites to control the spread of invasive plants.

"Residents of the Sea to Sky Corridor are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful parts of our province. This funding will help protect our ecosystem from invasive species for future generations to enjoy," McIntyre said in a statement.

The SSISC invites the community to its upcoming open house and annual general meeting on April 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Executive Suites Hotel in Squamish (40900 Tantalus Rd.).

Participants at this free event can expect to learn about the latest invasive news from local and regional partners, connect with others interested in invasive species management, and have a say on what's important.

In addition to hearing about what the SSISC is planning in 2013, tasty treats and beverages will be served.
