TORONTO — Police are searching for two suspects after a shooting in Toronto's east end left two people dead Tuesday night, officials said.

Police said officers responded to a report of gunshots heard in the area of Bain Avenue and Logan Avenue just after 11 p.m.

They said two males were found with gunshot wounds and one of them was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other victim was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Det. Sgt. Alan Bartlett said officers are still working to identify the victims and notify next of kin. The victims are estimated to be in their late teens to early twenties, he said Wednesday.

"We understand how unsettling these types of events can be in neighbourhoods," Bartlett said at a press conference. "To that end, the residents of this area can expect to see a heightened police presence."

Police had said on social media Tuesday night that two male suspects wearing dark clothing were last seen running toward Withrow Park.

But Bartlett said police have "conflicting information" on suspect descriptions at this time due to their reliance on eyewitness statements.

He said the shots fired at the scene appeared to have been clustered.

"I don't believe this was a random act at this point, but it's very early for me to speculate and use the word 'target' or 'ambush,'" Bartlett said, adding that a vehicle of interest at the scene will undergo forensic examination.

Bartlett said anyone with information or camera footage is asked to contact investigators.
